CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF COMMUNITY FOOTBALL

Click here for photos of the 75th celebration

The 2001 football season signaled the 75th anniversary of the Panton Hill Football Club.

This of course is a most important event in the clubs proud history and also a very special year for the entire Panton Hill community and district. During the day the Panton Hill Seniors and Reserves played against our traditional rivals Hurstbridge, with pre match entertainment and special activities for the kids.

The Gold 104 Giant Stereo was there as well as the Diamond Valley Brass Band. The teams lined up for the playing of the National Anthem, and The Hillers recorded a great twenty six point victory (see match results).

On Saturday night the 9th June a Gala Dinner and Ball was held at the Panton Hill Hall.

As part of the celebrations the announcement of the Panton Hill Football Club "Team of the 20th Century" was made.

Past players and members were invited to cast their votes on the best players they had seen at the Club, from all eras, then a panel of judges selected the The Panton Hill Football Club best players of the century based on the nominations.

Several Life Members, 300 game players, Captains, Coaches and Best & Fairest players made the list, as well as three current players; 2 time B&F Dean Campbell, former Captain/Coach Dean Easton and past Club Champion/Captain and Reserves Coach Robert Lamb.

The final team is listed below, and special thanks is given to all concerned for making this occasion so memorable for the 300 who attended, and all those proud to have worn and supported the mighty Redbacks, especially Tony Cahir, Dennis Kerr, Mick Everett, and Gavin Ward.

CAPTAIN/COACH WARREN EMSON

Warren Emson was Captain/Coach from 1954 – 1959 and again from 1961-1966. Naturally, this included the Premiership in 1955.

Players speak of the total respect they had for him. This respect came from his undoubted ability as a player, his leadership on the field, and his approach to coaching. He was not a ranter or raver. He would take no nonsense – either from his own players or the opposition.

He addressed everyone quietly, listened to ideas but expected his instructions to be carried out. Players knew he was asking nothing of them he wouldn’t do himself.

He worked other teams out and was probably ahead of his time in asking players to tag opponents.

All who knew Warren believe Panton Hill had been lucky to have a coach of exceptional ability that contributed to our golden age.

WHAT A MEMORY!

People are still raving about the 75th Anniversary Celebrations last year and here's another great piece of photographic history for the Club. Pictured below is three players from the PHFC Premiership team of 1955, Mike Carns, Ernie Donaldson and Laurie Deale. The other photo was taken at the Anniversary Ball last year (2001), and is of the same three people, with Ernie again holding the same ball as he was in 1955.

75th ANNIVERSARY CONGRATULATIONS

Dear PHFC Committee
I wish to congratulate the Committee for the way the 75th Anniversary Dinner
was organized. This is the best organized function that I have ever been to.
We gave Gavin Ward 10 out of 10 for the way he spoke and had everyones attention at all time. Thank you Gavin. I would also like to thank Tony Cahir for also making us welcome as we are now strangers to Panton Hill. The tables and all the printing were done to perfection and, as we did, I think everyone had a wonderful night. Thanks also to Dennis Kerr who also did a lot of interviewing of past players and their wives. Good luck for the rest of the season.
Alan Lacey (Life member) & Ruby Emson (my sister).

Dear PHFC Committee
I am writing to thank everyone involved in the organizing of the 75th Anniversary Gala Ball. It was obviously a mammoth task to take on, and it all seemed to work like clockwork on the night. From the people who printed the tickets to the commemorative booklet, the people who decorated the hall, set the tables and organized the memorabilia display, to the catering people who were able to satisfy the appetites of such a large gathering, and the friendly girls who brought the drinks to the tables, a job well done by all.
The official part of the evening which included the interview on tape with Bob Cracknell from the 1934 team was a highlight then later the naming of the team with the corresponding photos and stats on the screen was very well done it really topped off a fantastic night for us when Mick was included in the Team of the 20th Century, his plaque is now proudly on display in our family room.
The amount of work involved to put such a fantastic night together so well must have been enormous. It would have taken many hours of meetings and phone calls etc. to put in altogether and nobody seemed to have been forgotten. It was a wonderful atmosphere and everyone involved in the club showed the same friendliness as we remembered at the club in days gone by.
The guests at our table which included 5 players from the 50's had a wonderful night and enjoyed catching up with old teammates and friends that had not seen for forty years or more (in some cases).
It is a night we will remember for many years to come. Once again congratulations to all on a job well done.
Regards, Leonie and Mick Carns

Dear PHFC Committee
My husband and I were lucky enough to attend the 75th Anniversary Dinner.
What an event!
The afternoon football match was very nostalgic rain and mud and a great win, real Aussie Rules. But what a transformation for the dinner, as soon as we walked in we could feel the friendliness. The mud was washed off the players and all the young women looked gorgeous. We caught up with the former players and their wives who were present and talked about old times and what we are all doing now. The presentation of the formal part of the evening was superb. I especially liked the reminiscences of Bob Cracknell, that was so well done as was the way the Team of the 20th Century was announced. The fact that my husband, Ted Sadler, was one of the team members only added to the pleasure. Congratulations to the organizing committee for a memorable afternoon and night.
Regards, Joan Sadler, Cape Patterson.

Dear Tony,
I would like to give a big Thank You to the committee, selectors of the Team of the 20th century and the hard workers behind the scene. To Gavin Ward, Tony Cahir, Mick Everett and Dennis Kerr for organizing such a wonderful evening.

It was an honor to stand on stage and accept the plaques in honour of my father, Bob Cracknell and husband Jack Cameron. It's a night that will live in my memory forever.

Lovely to see so many past players, there were plenty of stories told during the night.

I would also like to compliment the young players and their partners on the dress and the way they conducted themselves on the night. They are a credit to the Club.

To you Tony, a special "Thank You."

I wish the Club success for the remainder of the season

Yours in Friendship
Gwen Cameron
